Stefanie’s Champion of Hope: Shannon Peterson
Upper Arlington resident Shannon Peterson met Stefanie at a fundraising event in 1999, soon after Shannon’s own breast cancer scare, which thankfully turned out to be a benign lump. The scare was a catalyst, catapulting her into what has become a mission of hope – to raise enough money for cancer research so that one day, we can all live in a cancer-free world.

As for Stefanie, she knew she had found a kindred spirit in Peterson, and began to introduce her to key people in the cancer community and involve her in the Spielman Fund, which Shannon continues to actively participate in to this day. Shannon also founded the Stefanie’s Team of Hope peloton, the #1 Grassroots Fundraising Peloton in all three years they have ridden.

“Stefanie would be thrilled and grateful for everyone's support in the fight to end cancer,” Shannon said. “We are committed to this fight, but we cannot do it alone. It is going to take all of us working together. We can beat this disease. Together we can and will create a cancer-free world.”

The Spielman Fund At Work
Researchers from Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute evaluated tissue samples, obtained from the Stefanie Spielman Tissue Bank to lead new research on triple-negative breast cancer.

The findings from this research could lead to new screening methods and perhaps new targeted treatments for this aggressive form of breast cancer. This study investigated associations between microRNA expression levels, mRNA expression levels and overall survival and distant-disease-free survival in women with triple-negative breast cancer. Learn more about the study and the researcher’s findings.

Our Proud Partners: Jersey Mike's
In March, Jersey Mike’s known for its fresh sliced/fresh grilled East Coast-style subs, hosted their 3rd Annual Month of Giving. This year, the local Jersey Mike’s coop elected to benefit breast cancer research at OSUCCC – James by donating their Month of Giving proceeds to the Spielman Fund. All throughout March, diners could make a $1, $3 or $5 donation at the register to the Spielman Fund. And on March 27, 100% of the proceeds from Jersey Mike’s lunches benefited the fund. Representatives from the Spielman Fund were on-site at three local Jersey Mike’s stores to hand out giveaways. In 2012, Jersey Mike’s raised $858,000 for 74 different charities nationwide and while totals are still being calculated, this year they hope to have raised even more. Thank you to Jersey Mike’s for choosing the Spielman Fund!
