This e-newsletter provides a look at some of the groundbreaking research, innovative patient care and prestigious honors, awards and achievements that make Ohio State’s internationally renowned cancer program a destination of choice for cancer patients and families from around the world. Realizing that every cancer is biologically unique and that no cancer is routine, the experts at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) are transforming the way cancers are prevented, detected, treated and cured. The Destination Medicine Global Health Care (DMGH) team at the OSUCCC – James and the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is dedicated to ensuring that distance and language are not obstacles to receiving world-class care, opening the door to people everywhere who turn to us for help.
NEW DESTINATION MEDICINE ASSOCIATE It is important to ensure that the right people are placed in the right positions at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. That’s why Shadi Elghobary was selected to be the new patient navigator in the Destination Medicine Department. In love with business and management his whole life, Elghobary received his master’s degree in business administration in 2012 after obtaining his bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical science in 2008. With his solid international working experience, he believes that his current job was tailored for him. Elghobary is Egyptian, and his first language is Arabic. He plays soccer weekly and travels internationally whenever he can. His preferred travel destination is Asia because of its natural beauty and friendly people. Supportive Care Programs for Those Diagnosed With Cancer and Their Caregivers Cancer Survivorship begins the day of diagnosis and continues throughout the balance of life. Living with cancer often presents many new coping challenges and impacts all areas of life. JamesCare for Life provides free supportive programs for cancer patients and caregivers/family members that can be accessed from the time of diagnosis. Programs focus on the physical, emotional, practical and spiritual ways that life is impacted by cancer and are designed to empower survivors and caregivers by providing education, support and coping tools that aid health and well-being.

Ohio State Receives $5.5 Million Grant to Study Health Impact of Youth Vaping
Researchers at The Ohio State University will study the health effects of e-cigarettes and nicotine on youth and help develop vaping cessation programs after receiving a $5.5 million grant from the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association announced nearly $17 million in grants as part of its ENACT: End Nicotine Addiction in Children and Teens research initiative.
The Destination Medicine Global Health Care team participated in The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s “Day in the Life” in six words challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a once-in-a-lifetime challenge for clinical and administrative staff that has been met with equally unprecedented resilience, creativity and dedication to the care of our patients.

For patients who are immunocompromised but must continue visiting hospitals for their care, their fear of contracting the virus is immense. Papadimos receives Fulbright All-Disciplines Award
Thomas Papadimos, MD, clinical professor of anesthesiology in the Ohio State College of Medicine, has received a Fulbright All-Disciplines Award to Athens, Greece. Papadimos will teach a palliative medicine course and a mechanical circulatory support course at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens School of Medicine from October to December 2020.
Crucial questions about how to keep food safe have been raised during the outbreak of COVID-19. Sanja Ilic, PhD, assistant professor of human nutrition in the College of Education and Human Ecology, and an Ohio State University Extension food safety state specialist, shares her expertise and answers to frequent questions she has been asked, from whether it's a foodborne illness to safety measures to observe when grocery shopping or using takeout service.
Ohio State College of Medicine faculty members Clara Lee, MD, MPP, and J. Nwando Olayiwola, MD, MPH, FAAFP, are recipients of the 2020 Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine fellowship, a one-year program supporting the advancement of promising women leaders in their organizations. Over the course of the year, each will lead a college initiative while growing executive leadership skills for career advancement.
